Media Literacy

Taught by: Dr Kat Grogg

To be media literate is to be able to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication. Media literacy skills also include everything from navigating popular culture, to being a better citizen, and even being a better communicator in your everyday life. This class will explore the various types of media, why they are created, goals of the creators, and hopefully how to avoid being manipulated by it. We will even create some of our own media!

Most class materials will be available free online or provided by the instructor. Students will need access to local & national newspapers from time to time (online is preferred and can usually be accessed via your public library). Students will need gmail and access to Google Classroom to receive assignments, access materials, & communicate with the instructor & their classmates.  Homework typically includes reading, watching videos, preparing  projects, and/or listening to a podcast. Work done in advance of class prepares students to actively take part in the class discussions and other activities.

Weekly homework: 2 hours
