Reading and Writing Poetry With Living Poets
Taught by: Briana Aaron
In this class we are going to enter the world of Living Poets. Teaching Living Poets opens teens up to a world of contemporary poetry that feels relevant to their own lives and allows them an opportunity to fall in love with language and poetry in a whole new way. Students will read, analyze, and interact with poems in class before using them as mentor texts to write their own poems. We will explore the work of poets like Amanda Gorman, Clint Smith, Rupi Kaur, Kaveh Akbar, José Olivarez, Victoria Chang, and many more.
Homework will include the completion of writing projects begun in class and reading supplemental poetry as assigned.
Weekly homework: 1-2 hours
