World Literature: Satire and Subversive Works

Taught by: Tiffany Ard

From the earliest known examples of literature we can see that writers have always found that they can raise controversial issues more safely with humor and irony. These stories tell us so much about a culture’s flaws, contradictions, values, and power structures. In this yearlong class we will read and examine satirical works throughout history and discuss the structure and style, as well as the use of figurative language, symbolism, and tone.

Although this is not a writing class, the discussions and in-class activities will help students strengthen their analytical and writing skills.

Note about work outside of class: There will be reading every week. Reading assignments are crucial so you can fully participate. Audio books count! I try to make sure that audio versions are available for as much of our reading as possible.

Weekly homework: 1-3 hours
